Rangers have once again been linked with a move for Kenny McLean with the well known bluenose currently out of favour at Norwich City.

He has played a key role for Scotland in getting to the European Championships, scoring penalties in shoot-outs against both Israel and Serbia and Alan Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, believes that it would be a good move by Steven Gerrard.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked about the speculation surrounding the former Aberdeen midfielder, he said:

“I think he’d be a really good signing, he’s a great player.

“He knows what it’s all about, he’s obviously played up Scotland, he knows how big those teams are so I think it’d be a fantastic signing.

“He’s such a quality player, he’s had a lot of experience down south now that he can add to Gerrard’s squad so it doesn’t surprise me they’re looking at him.”

So is Hutton correct?

Absolutely, McLean very much fits the profile of a Rangers midfielder, capable of operating at both ends of the park, protecting the defence but also supporting the attack.

Which Rangers player has the most international caps?

He’s also proven at international level – currently on 16 caps –  the Premier League and the English Championship, with the added bonus of years of SPFL experience – his squad status of having started around 30% of Norwich’s fixtures also suggests that he wouldn’t cost a fortune.

Steven Gerrard missed out on McLean once before and as Ross Wilson suggested recently, any target is fully analysed, no gambles are taken, and the Scotland international is as no-risk as they come.
