Australia assistant boss Rene Meulensteen has claimed that Hibernian forward Martin Boyle would add to Rangers already frightening attack, as reported by The Daily Record.

Boyle has not had his injury problems to seek but he is now showing the sort of form that makes him one of the highest rated players outside of the Old Firm, that he has more assists against Rangers than the rest of the league put together is an achievement in itself.

When asked about the Scottish-born forward, the former Manchester Untied assistant manager said:

“I’m actually surprised that a club like Celtic or Rangers haven’t come in for him because he’s got so much to offer and is doing really well for Hibs right now.

“Martin’s great – he’s full of beans, hard-working, quick, agile and direct.

“He’s got something special about him, he’s not afraid to run at people and has a heart like a lion.

“Martin has had a few injury setbacks, but personality-wise he never stops smiling. He’s a good guy and a very good player.”

Boyle is a decent player and has shown that he can cause problems against either of Glasgow’s big two but so did Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker before they were signed, this is no longer enough to justify being a target.

How many senior players did Rangers sign this summer?

Ross Wilson has shown that he is willing to cast his net significantly further than the SPFL and – with the exception of Ryan Jack – he is wholly justified in that approach, there is little proof to suggest it is a market we should be shopping in.

When Rangers can sign players like Joe Aribo for around £300,000, that option will remain the first port of call where the standard of player is higher and the value for money is greater, rather than being forced to pay over the odds for local “talent”.
