Why Roofe has to stay despite departure reports

Rangers have added, on paper, a lot of goals to the attacking areas of the team, just as well seeing as Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe could be missing for the Champions League qualifiers.

Neither striker have played any minutes in pre-season so far with Roofe only taking part in a few sessions before his problematic calf flared up again, like Morelos, he has been seen training but he isn’t back on the pitch yet.

It’s frustrating when your best two strikers are unavailable and when you consider that they are capable of producing 50 goals and double figure assists between them, it’s a sizeable gap that they leave in the starting XI when they aren’t available.

I can understand fans maybe wanting to just “get rid” of Roofe given his injury problems but, realistically, who is going to take him when he is missing so many games? The Jamaican international has been linked with a move to Derby County in League One but  just can’t see the club or the player seeing this as a good move.

With Antonio Colak signed, the pressure for Roofe to be fit and available isn’t as great as it was last season and his strike rate of a goal every 105 minutes in the Scottish Premiership in 45 games dictates that we should be in no rush to let him go, that second figure is an issue though.

Having Morelos and Colak available for almost every game, with Malik Tillman also capable of playing through the middle, if Roofe can even provide cover and start for 50% of our games then he is worth keeping – the only caveat being if someone is willing to match what we paid for him, I’m just not sure we could bring someone else in to fill his spot who could guarantee the same goal return when he does play.
