Michael Beale said that Rangers might have to identify players that can take them to the next level and one of those should be a previous target.

Kemar Roofe is going to be missing for the Champions League qualifiers with his four game UEFA ban being upheld on appeal so, if Steven Gerrard decides that we needed more depth in attack to ensure qualification we should be targeting players that have the required attributes to make a difference.

The difficult part is identifying talent without paying over the odds and one player who could be available is Josh Maja, the Bordeaux striker has been on loan at Fulham for the second half of the season but after the London-based club were relegated, they may find it difficult to persuade him to stay permanently, even if they do have a pre-arranged fee of £9million agreed.

Maja was a target for Rangers last summer when it looked as though Alfredo Morelos was heading to Lille – who stand on the brink of an historic Ligue 1 title win – but they never went past their rejected £16m offer before being hit with Financial Fair Play penalties.

He has only scored five goals this season in 30 appearances but this is somewhat misleading when you realise that he has only been on the field for 1500 minutes or 16 full games, he’s also had the misfortune of playing for a team that doesn’t create too many chances or dominate games.

As with any potential marquee signing this summer, much will depend on who departs, for example, if Morelos does leave for our valuation of over £20m, getting Maja in for less than half of that would be decent business – he would be expensive, but like Ryan Kent, he will be worth more further down the line.

Ross Wilson will have a very long list of names covering every eventuality, Maja, if he returns to Bordeaux, could well be near the top.
