Rangers were last week linked with a move for James Carragher, not the retired centre-half and Sky Sports pundit, but the 18-year old Wigan defender attracting interest from the Premier League and son of the the former Liverpool stalwart.

Steven Gerrard’s relationship with the youngster’s dad could be key in any move, with Everton also said to be monitoring his situation, but the Gers gaffer’s former England team-mate, Paul Robinson, believes that having such a connected and iconic manager will only help Rangers gain the edge in this summer’s transfer market, as told to Football Insider:

“The connections Steven has throughout football will stand him in good stead in any transfer market.

“That’s part of what Steven is doing up there. He’s not just signing players for the now, he’s signing them for the future as well.

“He’s putting the building blocks in place so Rangers stay where they are for a long time.

“His contacts will always give him the option on some good young players. Whether it be Jamie Carragher or someone else.”

We’ve seen on countless times already that the “Gerrard factor” has been hugely influential in persuading players to join Rangers when other clubs were competing for potential targets, players like Joe Aribo, Kemar Roofe and Jermain Defoe would never have come to the club if someone like Derek McInnes was in charge.

That the recruitment team is looking at players like Carragher is also encouraging, identifying talented youngsters from around the country is key if we are to have sustainable success and a sustainable business model in the years ahead – Gerrard may be a legend, but he is also leaving a legacy.
