Arsene Wenger was famous for not spending money if he had injured players set to return to full fitness and, whoever takes the reins at Rangers will have several proverbial new signings ready to get back to competitive action.

The news that the rumours about Tom Lawrence having a set back have been put to bed which is a small mercy and that wasn’t the only good news with Gheorghe Hagi giving an interview in Romania that suggests his son Ianis isn’t far away, via The Daily Record:

“He’s in his last period. I talked to him, he’s good, he’s doing well. He’ll go in easy, easy, he’s had a very hard time.

”Rangers is a huge club, at the level of the big clubs. It is one of the clubs with the most trophies won, in the top three.”

The last phase of anterior cruciate ligament surgery is increasing basic fitness levels and sport specific training drills.

We’ve all seen the videos on his Instagram account tracking his progress and the club posted an interview and series of pictures of him on the training pitch this week too – he must be dying to join in full practice.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was a clear fan of Ianis, playing him wide right in Europe but also as a number ten and in a central midfield position too when it came to domestic football. It finally looked like we were going to get to see his best assets put to use rather than him being stuck out on the wing.

It will take him time to return to form but there is no doubt that, given how much we have missed creative players, Hagi’s return will be every bit as exciting as a new signing.
