Steven Gerrard has managed his squad to near perfection this season – St Mirren an obvious exception – and as a result there remains a few fringe players struggling for time that could soon be on their way out.

Jordan Jones and George Edmundson face an uncertain future for an entirely different reason but a report in Football Insider has claimed that Greg Stewart could be leaving in the January transfer window.

The 30-year old is out of contract at the end of the season and there is no chance of this being extended so the last chance for Rangers to make any money would be in the next window, however, given his lack of appearances – he still has a goal or assist for every 90 minutes he has played – we are more likely to see him go out on loan to get his wages of the weekly bill.

Gerrard has said that he expects there to be departures in the next few weeks and that he will have a chat with one or two members of his squad as reported by Glasgow Live:

“There will be a few who go out because they need to play, ones who haven’t had much game time. I need to be honest and respectful with a couple in the next few weeks.”

Stewart was a no-risk signing, a boyhood Rangers fan and a player that had a decent record in the Scottish Premiership when he signed, he won’t have been on big wages and he didn’t cost a transfer fee but despite having good footwork and being a decent finisher, he just couldn’t find a regular place in the starting XI and even the match day squad.

Has Stewart had a fair crack at Rangers?

Scoring a stunning performance in a 5-0 win against Aberdeen will be the highlight of his time in Light Blue and one of the best individual displays in Gerrard’s reign, spending the rest of the season at another Premiership club could prove to be useful, especially if he can cause problems for those in the East End in a similar fashion to Jamie Murphy at Hibs.
