Jordan Jones and George Edmundson have both been hit with a seven match ban after breaking coronavirus protocols to attend a private party, as reported by BBC Sport.

The duo were already suspended by Rangers after the incident and ordered to self-isolate and it could be that the pair have now played their last games for the club after finding out that they will not be eligible to play again until the end of December.

Steven Gerrard made it perfectly clear when the incident was first reported about how disappinted he was and where the pair now stood:

“I think it was important that the club took decisive action, and were very quick to do that which was pleasing to see.

“The players know they have let themselves down and their families. They’ve also badly let their teammates down, and the supporters of the club.

“And they’ll punished internally, and it’ll be dealt with internally.”

It will have little impact on the club with both players being little more than bit-part members of the gaffer’s squad but there have been a few questions raised about the length of their bans that have to be addressed.

The most obvious issue is the comparison to the bans handed out to Boli Bolingoli of Celtic for flying to Spain and back and the “Aberdeen eight” but there is a subtle and important difference.

How many senior players did Rangers sign this summer?

After these issues all the clubs and players were warned about their future behaviour and punishments were set for any more breaches of protocol, this isn’t a case of one club getting treated harsher than the rest.

We won’t have long to wait until we find out the fate of Jones and Edmundson with the transfer window soon to open but few would bet on them seeing out the season in Light Blue.
