They say that you should never go back to an ex, however, in football, it isn’t as simple as that.

Take Giovanni van Bronckhorst, for example, he has spoken before about his love for Rangers and that one day he would want to return to the club as manager and he has the CV and attributes that make him as good, if not better, than all the other candidates that are around.

There is another reason though.

Graeme Souness had Walter Smith.

Steven Gerrard had Gary McAllister.

A wiser head sitting next to the younger manager to guide him through stressful times and van Bronckhorst is no different.

His assistant at Feyenoord might be a familiar name to some, certainly those of a certain age and to those who know their Rangers history – Jan Wouters, who was Alex McLeish’s first team coach during his tenure between 2001 to 2006.

It just make sense.

We are, of course, a different team and club to the one that Wouters left 15 years ago but he would be the perfect man to support van Bronkhorst and provide stability during an important part of the season, there would be no need to get used to the city or the surroundings and he is more than aware of the pressures that come with leading such a demanding club.

Hopefully Ross Wilson moves quickly so that the new manager has time to prepare for Hibs in the league cup semi-final after the international break, it makes even more sense when you consider Wouters and van Bronckhorst have been to Hampden before and won on many occasions – very much a case of back to the future.
