Image for Hagi reveals influence who made Gers move a “no brainer”

When Rangers first signed Ianis Hagi on loan in January 2020 it was something of a coup.

Having previously been nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award and torn England apart at the Under-21 European Championships, the Romanian international was one of the continent’s most talented and famous youngsters.

A move to Belgium never really worked out for the 22-year old though, Genk’s loss being our gain, as the mercurial creator goes from strength to strength in a Light Blue shirt.

Speaking to Jordan Campbell of The Athletic, Hagi explained what swung his decision to move to Glasgow despite always harbouring ambitions to one day play in La Liga:

“My dream league since I was a kid was Spain so I was tending to lean more there, but at the same time I knew the coach was Steven Gerrard, so it was so attractive because I was going to be managed by one of the best midfielders in history.

“I spoke to my father as I didn’t know much about Rangers and he said, ‘This is a no brainer. I’ve been there and it’s a huge club, it’s the right mentality for you’.”

First of all, thank you Gheorghe, if it wasn’t for the legendary Romanian we might not have been able to persuade Ianis to sign for Rangers but it’s safe to say that, now that he is here, he is loving every minute of it –  he thrives on the pressure of playing for a big club, in front of 50,000 demanding fans at home and ones that hate you at every away ground in Scotland.

Will Gerrard go to Aston Villa?

Yes

No

No

It’s a fascinating interview with Hagi, one that shows how much he wants to develop as a player, his physical improvement alone proving that he has the mentality to be a success.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget just how young he is given how mature he comes across in interviews, like the Gerrard, he has high standards of his own making Rangers a perfect fit – hopefully for years to come.
