“You never know…” – Gio would take “honour” of Gers job

|

With Steven Gerrard heading back to the Premier League, all eyes have now turned to Ross Wilson and who the sporting director is going to bring in as his replacement.

Gary McAllister and Michael Beale are obvious choices as a pairing – either way round – but if we look outside our own club, there is only really one man who ticks most of the boxes – Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The former Gers midfielder kicked his final ball as a player in the 2010 World Cup final captaining the Netherlands and has since gone on to forge a respectable managerial career having won the Eredivisie, Dutch cup and super cup with Feyenoord.

He would also take the job in a heartbeat if he was offered it and given that he is available immediately, he should be pretty close to the top of our wish-list, having been linked before, this is what he said in 2019, as reported by The Sunday Post:

“Rangers are a special football club, and I always look out for their results. For me to have been a part of their history is a wonderful feeling, and very humbling.

“To be the manager of Rangers is a huge honour, of course. I’ve been linked with it once or twice, and that was very nice.

“It’s a great football club and has a special feeling in my heart. So it was a huge compliment. But I was totally committed to and focused on Feyenoord.

“You never know what happens because I know the club and have nice feelings for it.”

The Rangers manager has to have presence and has to be respected, this can be earned in different ways, either as a man and a coach – like Walter Smith was and Michael Beale is – or because of a stellar playing career – Graeme Souness or Steven Gerrard – others, such as Dick Advocaat attain this because of their reputation and success as manager but we can no longer afford to shop in that market.

We have to look at who ticks the most boxes and meets our budget and, for me, the only outside choice should be Van Bronckhorst, he was successful at Ibrox before, there is no reason why he can’t be successful again.
