Where has all the money gone?

Α question that α lot of Rangers fans were asking in the summer after seeing our record transfer fee being broken twice, an incredible European run and qualification for the Champions League. Not only that, but our commercial partnerships are more lucrative than they have ever been – we also make decent money off merchandise now.

John Bennett and Stewart Robertson have both been seen this week looking to fill the void and clarify exactly where we currently are, addressing other off the field issues too, however, I’m not sure their efforts have been as warmly received as they would have hoped for.

One prominent Rangers fan who asked the same question, at length, is our biggest shareholder Dave King, who targeted the chairman in particular for criticism, as reported by The Times:

“Given where we’ve come from, and given we’ve now got the Champions League money, I am extremely surprised that Douglas [Park, the current chairman] hasn’t made that available to Ross [Wilson, their sporting director].

“I am surprised the surplus resources haven’t found their way back into the team.”

Journalists and pundits alike have been trying to put the boot in, however, football finance is never straight forward and who better to explain what our current situation really is than Kieran Maguire, author of The Price of Football and podcast presenter on all things money relating to the beautiful game.

Speaking to the This is Ibrox podcast’s Tommy McIntyre, Maguire explains what state our finances are currently in, the breakdown of Calvin Bassey’s transfer to Ajax and why we don’t have £23million to spend straight away plus, the reason for Rangers not getting as much as people think from the Champions League due to recent changes designed to benefit the “big” teams”.

It’s α fascinating and easy to understand explanation from α truly independent and expert source, however, if you want α more detailed interrogation of our books, just seek out your nearest Celtic fan…
