Rangers have moved quickly to fill the sizeable hole left behind by the transfer of Calvin Bassey by signing Ben Davies from Liverpool on a 4-year contract, the left-sided centre-half arriving on a deal said to be worth up to £4million.

An initial payment of £3m with add-ons for another £1m included mean that the 26-year old has cost a similar amount to both Connor Goldson and Filip Helander, if he makes the same impact on the pitch then it will be money well spent.

It’s a move that was rumoured to have been completed some days ago and it’s a shame that he wasn’t able to play against West Ham United on Tuesday night, however, he will need to get up to speed quickly if he is to play a role in the upcoming Champions League qualifiers.

Ross Wilson, speaking to the club’s official website said of the move:

“I am delighted Ben has chosen Rangers as the next step in his career and Giovanni and our coaching staff are looking forward to working with him as we head into the new season.”

Davies was highly thought of before his move to Liverpool with many Premier League clubs considering making Preston an offer, a £10m valuation showing exactly the form that he was showing and that persuaded Jurgen Klopp to sign him as a back-up.

It’s a solid acquisition and one that solves the issue of who can be a consistent and reliable partner for Connor Goldson, John Souttar currently has the jersey but he won’t be able to play every game and Davies will be champing at the bit to get going ahead of a huge few weeks for the club.
