The problem with selling Calvin Bassey is well publicised in that he can, arguably lay claim to being both our best left-back and our best left-sided centre-half, his departure means that we have to either produce another outstanding piece of scouting or find two seperate players.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has hinted as much when he addressed Bassey’s impeding move to Ajax with Ben Davies already identified as being a long-term option for the heart of defence, he has played a decent amount of football at left-back as well but not for a considerable period of time and certainly not in the style that we would be demanding.

With Filip Helander looking increasingly likely that his body simply isn’t going to let him play regular football at the highest level and John Souttar’s past medical history meaning that we can’t demand the same work load from him as we do with Connor Goldson, there is still a need to consider the future of our centre-half department.

Leon King is clearly a huge talent but he should be given as much time as he needs to make the transition from promising youngster to established first-team regular, we also have to move on Jack Simpson and Nikola Katic who clearly aren’t suitable for what we need, arguably one of Ross Wilson’s hardest jobs.

Another potential target could well be straight out the Calvin Bassey playbook though with Chelsea’s Levi Colwill heading out the door, the left-sided defender enjoyed an excellent season on loan at Huddersfield Town last season but is miles down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, no shame given the squad depth that they have especially when The Athletic have tipped him for international recognition in the future.

Additionally, the 19-year old seemed disheartened when talking about his future recently, giving an indication of life as. Chelsea youngster:

“I think I’m ready (for the Premier League). I’ve learnt a lot this year, so the next step I hope will be in the Premier League, with Chelsea, Huddersfield or whoever.”

The BBC’s Frazer Fletcher has also revealed that there is plenty of interest in the 6ft 2inch tall stopper and that there is an offer on the table from an, as yet, unnamed Scottish club, whether or not this is us, we’ll need to wait and see…
