Rangers have been linked with two top quality centre-halves this week, Ross Wilson preparing for the future rather than resting on his laurels or hoping that Connor Goldson will about turn and extend his stay at the club.

Champions League football can be the difference for players making their decisions at the top end of the game, however, former Gers gaffer, Alex McLeish, reckons that might not be the case with the vice-captain and that, at 29-years old, he may feel he has one last big contract available to him, as told to Football Insider:

“It’s different nowadays than it was all those years ago.

“We’d certainly have waited to play in the European Cup. I would think that players would be thinking more about their future and the financial side as well.

“Let’s face it. A move like Nathan Patterson’s doesn’t come around every week. Possibly, Connor will be thinking of something like that.

“He’ll possibly look to get back to England. That is if he and his agents feel that he’s capable of playing at a high level in the Premier League.”

A return to the Premier League would instantly guarantee him bigger wages, estimates of £60,000 a week pretty much doubling what he is currently on at Rangers, it’s easy to see why it isn’t as straight forward a decision as some might think.

If Rangers do retain their title, Goldson will know exactly what he is walking away from but, if he does decide to go with another Scottish Premiership winner’s medal in his back pocket, he will have proven to be worth every penny of the £3million that was spent to sign him from Brighton.
