Connor Goldson was already a man under pressure; below par performances, individual mistakes and not committing to a new contract were factors that didn’t help his cause after claiming that there were players in the Rangers dressing room that had lost their hunger.

Football fans aren’t stupid, we all know how much more money the vice-captain could earn if he decides to move under freedom of contract and return to the Premier League, we wouldn’t blame him, but, he has to give everything he’s got whilst still pulling on the Light Blue shirt of Rangers if he is to leave with our blessing and not with his tail between his legs.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa striker, Gabby Agbonlahor reckons that his comments at the weekend were nothing to wanting to quit Ibrox, however, there is one pretty obvious reason why he might:

“He’s going to want the money that Scotland can’t pay.

“If he’s earning £20,000-£30,0000-a-week in Scotland he can earn £60,000-a-week in England. That’s going to be on his mind.

“Maybe it’s a money thing for him. He’s getting to that age where you want to make as much money as you can from the game.

“At 28, turning 29, it’s your last big contract and you want it to be your biggest.”

Agbonlahor is right, Goldson has spoken about wanting to do the right thing for him and his family but has also said he wants to get things sorted as soon as possible, there is a suggestion there that he wants to extend his contract but with Steven Gerrard likely to be sniffing around at Villa, it’s easy to understand why the centre-half would want to sign for a manager he knows and be able to move to just a stones throw away from where he grew up on two to three times his current salary.

It’s now at the stage where it would be a bigger surprise if Goldson signed an extension, there was a lot of positivity in the summer that it was going to happen but the circumstances have changed, with Ross Wilson likely to have identified replacements already there is every chance that January’s Old Firm derby could be the last time we see him.
