Rangers reported interest in Vitesse Arnhem’s Danilho Doekhi goes as far back as last April with the Dutch centre-half now into the last six months of his contract and very much a player in demand.

A recent story claimed that there were a few clubs, Dinamo Zagreb, Napoli and ourselves keeping tabs on the 23-year old but, as yet, nothing official had been announced.

Speaking to Omrop Gelderland during a winter training camp with Vitesse, the towering defender has confirmed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is a fan and given an update on when he might be likely to leave his homeland:

“We have no contact with that anymore,” Doekhi said when speaking about Zagreb, however on Rangers he continued,

“They follow me, but there are several clubs. The fans don’t have to worry about me leaving yet.

“But there are certainly things that you sometimes philosophize about yourself. To my knowledge, there has not yet been a club that has reported to Vitesse. And I myself am not fond of a winter transfer, but again of a departure in the summer period.”

For all that it would be great to see him bedded in early, getting him signed in any size, shape or form would be a tremendous bit of business given how well suited he would be to our system and style of play.

It’s a transfer that definitely has some legs, especially when the player himself confirms that we have been looking at him, it might sound harsh, but, long-term, letting Leon Balogun go and signing Doekhi makes a lot of sense regardless of whether or not Connor Goldson extends his stay.

John Souttar has also been confirmed as a target by both The Herald and The Four Lads Had a Dream blog, without considering the current options available to GvB that would be a strong centre-half pairing in itself so, it looks like Vital Rangers might get two names ticked off the January sales shopping list after all.
