Rangers are rumoured to be preparing for life after Borna Barisic if recent transfer stories are to go by, first it was Marijan Cabraja, now it is Alfie Doughty being lined up to replace the Croatian international.

Old Firm rivals Celtic had offers knocked back in the summer for the left-footed Charlton defender but it now appears as though the Light Blues have edged ahead in the race for his signature, according to Allan Hutton in an interview with Football Insider.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked who he thinks the player would choose if given the choice between the two sides, he said:

“I mean if we’re talking at the start of the season, where would, maybe, his mind be going?

“If both teams were interested you’d think: ‘Right, Celtic are going for 10 in a row, they’ve got a good chance of winning things,’ but it shows you how things change in just a few months time.

“Rangers look the stronger outfit, it looks as is if there’s a great chance of them winning the league and maybe has mind would have changed, so it’s obviously a decision for him.

“Both teams are interested so it really falls down to the player and where he sees himself doing better. At the moment I think Rangers are in the driver’s seat.”

So is Hutton correct?

One team has a well-balanced squad that has been assembled to fit a game plan with every player singing off the same song sheet, the other has a mixture of expensive flops, loanees, players who want to be somewhere else and others who are past their best – it’s not a difficult decision to make.

Where is the priority for new signings?

Rangers topped their Europa League group whereas Celtic finished bottom of theirs and are 19 points behind us, why would you sign for a club that is probably considering changing it’s manager in the very near future?

Doughty needs to only look at the likes of Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara to see how his career could develop if he joins Gerrard’s side, only those of a certain persuasion would have to take their time in making one of the easiest decisions a player could face in their career – the proverbial no-brainer.
