One option for Gerrard in central-half crisis

Rangers face yet another selection crisis ahead of a big European fixture after Filip Helander was stretchered off against St Johnstone at the weekend.

If he was available, Steven Gerrard, would have said that Connor Goldson would be out of isolation to ease the fears of Gers fans, however, the gaffer can’t even replace the big Swede with Jack Simpson due to the restrictions on squad selection.

So, as it stands, we have Leon Balogun, Calvin Bassey and Leon King for Gerrard to choose from to form a pairing against Lyon on Thursday night – with Borna Barisic being fit, I just can’t see King being risked against such a high level of opposition when Bassey has played in the middle for us before.

The good thing about playing Bassey as the left sided centre-half is that he is naturally left footed, he would also have two hugely experienced players either side of him and, as well as Balogun, does at least possess decent pace which always come in handy as you step up a level of competition.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

Bassey is expected one day to move into the middle and it must be remembered that he is still hugely inexperienced at senior level, only just getting into double figures for games that he has played, most of them at left-back.

You never known though, Gerrard might just be playing mind games and that Goldson will be available to take his usual place and see us have a much more familiar line up in defence – fingers will be crossed until about quarter to seven on Thursday night.
