Calvin Bassey’s departure, as with Joe Aribo’s left something of a problem for Ross Wilson in that his versatility meant that there was more than one hole needing to be filled in the squad.

It would seem as if we have identified a replacement for centre-half in the shape of Liverpool’s Ben Davies, however, he’s far from the athletic, marauding full-back that the Nigerian international was for us.

Speaking to The Rangers Review, Giovanni van Bronckhorst teased supporters by suggesting that we might see more than one new face coming in before the window shuts:

“If Calvin is going, he was a left-back and a left-central defender, so we will look at the qualities of the player and the dynamic to see if we move for one player or two. Calvin Bassey recruitment structure and how that is moving forward.

“You always have to be ready because you just never know when you are going to lose players. You have to have your list ready for possible players coming in. I think we are well prepared for anything that can happen.

“We knew about the interest in Calvin because he played really well but sometimes you expect it might be another year away. For Calvin, it’s a nice move and for the club as well business-wise it’s what you want to do.”

Bassey is a bit of a freak in that he can adapt mid-game between the two positions and play each with equal aplomb, replacing him on a like-for-like basis is almost an impossible task.

In Davies, we have secured a very solid acquisition and any comparisons to Bassey would be best avoided, he may have been at the club for a relatively short spell and made a small number of appearances, however, his final two appearances in a Light Blue shirt will live long in the memory.
