The Rangers number 1 jersey is up for grabs next season with Allan McGregor tipped to retire at the ripe old age of 40, leaving behind a trophy laden career with a highlight reel as good as any keeper’s.

A few names have been linked with replacing the legend, Martin Fraisl at Schalke the latest, however, it would appear that the Austrian – who is out of contract at the end of the season – is staying put, according to a report in The Scottish Sun:

“I feel very, very comfortable at Schalke and like the people in and around the club. I like the Schalke mentality a lot. I can certainly imagine a contract extension.

“In general, I have a clear career plan. I only ever speak publicly about my career path once I have achieved them.

“But when you play in the second division with Schalke, you can imagine what my next big goal is.”

I still think that we don’t need any further reinforcements and that, in Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie, the future of the position is in safe hands, the pair have never let us down when thy have been called upon and McLaughlin in particular deserves the chance to make the job his own.

At 34, he still has plenty of good years ahead of him, has never had any long-term, serious injuries, and is every bit the modern stopper in that his ability to relieve pressure from his defence at set-pieces and in open play is a huge asset for any team that wants to build from the back.

It’s one position where taking a gamble can backfire and lead to further money needing to be spent, thankfully though, we don’t need to spend a penny.
