Norwich City look set to pip Rangers in the chase for Billy Gilmour’s signature which, ironically, could see playing time reduced for another former Gers target.

Kenny McLean suffered the cruelest of blows when he suffered a knee injury after promotion to the Premier League was already secured, yes, a manager has to pick his strongest team but I’m not sure Daniel Farke will be on the well-known bluenose’s Christmas card list after missing out on the European Championships with Scotland.

The 29-year old is set to recover in time for the start of the new league campaign if all goes well with his rehabilitation and, with two years left on his current contract, it will be worth watching him to see if he can rediscover the form that was so important in the Canaries getting promoted – and that first attracted Steven Gerrard to consider a move for the 19-times capped international.

A player international team-mate, John McGinn, claimed was “criminally underrated” is a key member of Farke’s side but with Scott Arfield approaching the twilight of his career and the last year of his deal at Rangers, McLean could well be targeted once again to provide a box-to-box option in midfield.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

The squad that Gerrard and Ross Wilson have assembled is well balanced, a good mix of young and old, with more than a few players who “know what it means” to play for the club and McLean would certainly fit that bill.

Kenny Dalglish called for the Light Blues to buy more Scottish players and with few having either the quality or desire to head to Ibrox, the former Aberdeen midfielder is certainly one who would tick a lot of boxes.
