Rangers look set to miss out on any potential move for Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour after reports on Monday claimed that the midfielder is set to stay in the Premier League next season.

Sky Sports have claimed that the 20-year old is heading to Norwich City for a medical following the completion of his self isolation after testing positive for Covid-19 prior to Scotland’s European Championships decider against Croatia.

The Scottish Sun has also reported on the deal, one that would see him play more regularly than the game time he is currently getting under Thomas Tuchel.

It’s a frustrating one because it’s probably the last chance that we will get to sign Gilmour, albeit temporarily, given the potential that he has displayed in the early stages of his career – man of the match awards on most of his full debuts in the Premier League, FA Cup and for Scotland point to a very promising future.

How many players do Rangers have at the Euros this summer?

Norwich may seem like a strange destination but they do have an attacking style of play and from a personal point of view, Gilmour will already know the likes of Kenny McLean and Grant Hanley from international duty, making the settling in period a little easier.

The only consolation, scant though it is, is that we will get to see him on a weekly basis now and that – at least – the Scottish national team should benefit from him playing regularly, it’s just a shame it won’t be in the Light Blue of Rangers.
