A lot of transfer speculation is very much a case of trying to piece together various rumours and seeing if any add up when they are pieced together.

When Steven Gerrard was surprisingly open about the potential arrival of a midfielder in the next few days, there was an instant demand to find out who it might be, the most common name mentioned being that of Juninho Bacuna, however there was something the gaffer said, via Sky Sports, that suggested he might not be the only addition:

“We’ve identified targets that we are looking at, to try and bring in. There’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make that happen.

“We’ve had some progress behind the scenes and when there’s something to announce, we will give you that information.

“But we are delighted to get John in, and Fashion, and hopefully we can do a little bit more business before the window shuts.”

The use of “targets” isn’t an accident, if it was just one player he would say “target”, also, the most recent news coming out of the Netherlands is that Heerenveen have identified a potential replacement for Joey Veerman, we couldn’t be that lucky could we?

Veerman’s price tag has always been believed to be the biggest stumbling block but if his club managed to get someone in to replace him, it might make them a little more flexible in negotiations.

Who scored Rangers first ever goal under Steven Gerrard in EL qualification?

It would certainly be a statement of intent if we added further new faces without selling any key players first of all, of course, we will have to sell eventually, but it would be good to have the extra strength in depth in first.

Gerrard hinted that we could even hear something before we kick off against Alashkert, if there wasn’t enough to look forward to already, who doesn’t love a new signing announced on a European night?
