Jack Wilshere’s “imminent” arrival at Rangers has gone cold in recent days and after Steven Gerrard’s midfield schooled Celtic’s in the Old Firm derby, it may be put on the back burner altogether.

The former Arsenal man – seen training at the weekend – was released by West Ham just a couple of weeks ago and immediately speculation surfaced surrounding a possible move to Ibrox.

With Rangers seemingly refusing to rule out a potential deal and the player himself interested to try “something different” it had looked as though Wilshere was about to be reunited with his former England colleague.

As the Gers strolled to a 2-0 win over Celtic at Parkhead, the engine room was particularly dominant in a team that still had Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and Bongani Zungu in reserve, three internationals that hadn’t even made the starting XI for a variety of reasons.

After Old Firm display, do we need Wilshere?

The romantic nature of trying to get a deal for Wilshere over the line is an attractive one but it has always been caveated with “if you can keep him fit”, but after reality set in, and with players returning to health, there are already plenty of options available to the gaffer.

The 28-year old has been around professional football for a long time having made his Gunners debut at just 16 with barely a season passing without him requiring an operation, the display against Celtic proved one thing, a half-fit Jack Wilshere is neither required nor desired if Rangers are finally to regain their rightful place at the top of Scottish football.
