Rangers are set to offer Connor Goldson a new contract after the centre-half’s heroics against Celtic confirmed his status as one of Steven Gerrard’s most important men.

Football Insider claims that a new deal was already in the pipeline with the 27-year old’s performances since signing two years ago from Brighton going from strength to strength.

This season has seen the Englishman form a formidable partnership with Filip Helander that has seen Rangers lose just three goals domestically all season, the big Swede has yet to lose a league game since he signed last summer.

Goldson is the vice-captain at Rangers and without any fans in the ground it is clear to hear his importance to the organisation of the defence and those in front of him, his reliability, like skipper James Tavernier’s is relentless in that he has barely missed a minute of football since his arrival – the £3million transfer fee looking like more of a bargain with every game that passes.

There had been reports of interest from the Premier League in the summer and when you consider that Celtic had reportedly turned down offers in the region of £13m for Kristoffer Ajer, the £6m fee being quoted for Goldson is maybe missing a digit or two, the Norwegian would currently be lucky to get a place on the Rangers bench.

Does Goldson deserve a new deal?

Steven Gerrard has made no secret of his admiration of Goldson in the past and how much faith he has in him as a leader, with the big man coming into his peak, the club are doing the right thing in looking to get such a key player tied down to a longer deal and rewarding him for the consistency he has shown on the park – all he has to do now is deliver a league title for the fans to celebrate off it.
