In the aftermath of the Champions League elimination at the hands of Rangers, Joey Veerman just could not accept what had happened with a very bitter response.

Amongst the excuses, claims of Rangers inadequacy and a suggestion of an abrupt tone with Dutch TV in the post-match interview, the one-time Rangers target was stung with disappointment and regret.

From an individual perspective, he showed flashes of quality but did not truly put his mark on the game. Part of his frustration will stem from that and he went on to vent further regarding his position and role on the pitch.

As reported by Voetbal International, the former Heerenveen man was quite outspoken on the game that had taken place:

“Last week I also indicated that I am more of a number 8 but I just play where I am drafted. I’m trying my best.”

Then the very salty offering on Rangers progress, having got the better of PSV over two legs:

“No, it’s not fair. I can’t remember a chance from them, but they do score. If you want to call that a chance… Okay, they hit the bar once, that was a good chance. But further. It doesn’t matter what I think of them.”

“We didn’t score and that’s not good. We haven’t created enough either. So is it right that Rangers is through? If you think so… I don’t think so.”

Reality

The disappointment and even anger from Veerman in the heat of the moment is understandable but the massive oversight is that his team weren’t good enough over both games to conquer Gio van Bronckhorst’s team.

No goals from open play, no chances taken last night when they were created, no significant, sustained damage caused to Rangers. They failed and can have no complaints that Champions League group stage football will be played at Ibrox over the next three months.
