The Alfredo Morelos saga is one that will run and run until he either signs a new contract or is sold. Hopefully, it isn’t one that will drag on until the end of the season – not only would we lose a valuable asset for nothing but, as we’ve seen before, he can be easily distracted.

With Sevilla said to be interested for some time, a report in The Athletic into Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s decision has revealed that they are prepared to be patient over any potential deal and wait until the end of the season to get their man:

“He changed agencies after the most recent January transfer window did not yield a move to a Champions League club but there is a reason the interest in him has died down and why English Premier League teams have never been queuing at the door to sign him despite his game seemingly been made for the British style of football. However, Morelos opened up his agency representation to a Spanish-based company and it is understood Sevilla are interested in landing him on a pre-contract this winter.”

I’ve always thought that Morelos’s lack of pace and athleticism were the main reasons why more clubs at a higher level didn’t come in for him. He is incredibly strong, but that only gets you so far, especially in a league that has a greater reliance on technical ability and quicker defenders than the Scottish Premiership.

Spanish football would be a good move for him but if he wants to play for a Champions League side then he has to have that sort of mentality, starting with a renewed attitude to fitness whether or not he moves on – his recent social media posts suggest that he is more than happy where he is though.
