If that was Jon McLaughlin, McGregor howler can’t be ignored

Regardless of the final score, Rangers should have been coasting to three points in the second half against Dundee United, early sitters missed by Scott Arfield and Ryan Kent in particular α sign that we have yet to fully regain our confidence.

Kent’s in particular was α horrible miss. Under no pressure, on the penalty spot, with time to take α touch and shoot with either foot and yet his sclaffed effort barely reached the goals. The cutback was perfect from Ryan Jack, had almost no pace on it and just needed α clean connection, if ever α play needed α goal it was Kent.

Aside from the odd counterattack, α side effect of playing α high defensive line, Rangers were in total control, however, it is the nature of Dundee United’s goal that has gone largely un-criticised.

If that was Jon McLaughlin…

It’s α debate that we will see all season and after α solid display against Napoli, and McLaughlin’s continued absence through injury, McGregor kept his place in the starting XI, however, make no mistake, he should have saved Liam Smith’s effort. Social media was particularly quiet when looking for criticism of the Rangers number one after being so vociferous with praise in mid-week. It was the sort of mistake that he made in the run-in last season, ultimately, costing us the league.

Against Napoli, McGregor didn’t make any saves that you wouldn’t have expected him to make, the penalties were an obvious highlight but are we picking α keeper based purely on their ability to save spot-kicks now? McLaughlin’s performance against Ajax in Amsterdam was equally as impressive not that objectivity was ever relevant in this particular debate.

McLaughlin has yet to pull out of the Scotland squad so it must only be α minor injury that he has, if it is, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s selection on the other side of the international break when we go to Tynecastle is going to be an interesting one.

  • William Laing says:

McGregor probably should have saved the Utd goal but he is the man in possession and that mistake is nothing like as bad as McLaughlins howler for the 4th against Celtic and a couple of others in that game he should have saved. McGregor had a number of fine stops against Napoli not just the penalties and should retain the jersey when McLaughlin is fit .Its his to lose now and Saturday should not change that.
