Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has recently questioned the future of Rangers’ Jamie Murphy despite him impressing whilst out on loan with Burton Albion, insisting that manager Steven Gerrard would be looking at higher calibre players for next season in an effort to better our 2019/20 campaign and push Celtic even closer in the battle for the title.

30-year-old Murphy headed out to League One Level in the January transfer window to get his game time up following his injury problems since arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion back in January 2018, and although the football calendar is now paused, he has scored seven times in ten matches for the side, earning himself some good reviews.

Speaking to Football Insider to give his thoughts, Whelan didn’t feel that even given his goalscoring form at the moment, that it would be enough to work his way into Gerrard’s plans for 2020/21.

“I do not think so. Rangers will be looking to bigger and better now if they want to compete with Celtic. Stevie has Jermain Defoe there and he will be fit for the start of next season and he is more in the plans than Murphy. I just cannot see Murphy going back there. If Rangers have aspirations they need younger players or players with more of a stature.”

Murphy certainly still has a role to play as a squad player I would think, but Whelan certainly has a point about finding younger talent so we can better plan for the future, but with one year left on his deal following this season, we may well look to cash in.

I like Jamie Murphy as a player and I believe he would be a regular starter at Ibrox had he not been a victim of the garbage surfaces that players are asked to play on. His confidence would be affected going to these sort of grounds given what happened to the lad. Shame.
