Rangers have been linked with a couple of players who have family connections to the club, not a game changer, but perhaps enough to give us the deciding vote.

John Souttar’s mum is a season ticket holder who will, of course, want the best for her son and to see him playing for the team she supports whilst Albert Gudmundsson could be following in his great grandfather’s footsteps if he moves from Alkmaar to join Rangers.

A deal for Souttar is very much on the cards but, despite the initial report from The Telegraph, there hasn’t been much more on the Icelandic international.

The 24-year old is out of contract at the end of the season but as reported by Voetbal International, it would appear that the Eredivisie side may be keen to cash in now given their manager’s attitude to his refusal to sign a new deal:

”Albert has indicated that he will not sign up for the time being.

“On the other hand, Albert knows that if we have to choose between equal players in his position, there is a chance that preference will be given to a player with a permanent contract.”

Nothing like good old fashioned blackmail to try and persuade a player to stay.

From which country does Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist come from?

Gudmundsson – with 29 caps – would be an excellent acquisition, especially if we could get him in January which would give him time to settle in and raise the levels of those around him.

We need to up the quota of Scottish players in the squad but an international winger with plenty of experience in a good league and pace to burn, on a free transfer? What’s not to like?

If I was in his shoes and had the option of sitting in the stands or potentially lining up against Borussia Dortmund and winning the league, I know which one I’d choose.
