Ross Wilson must read Vital Rangers, just as it looked like James Maxwell was resigned to leaving the club it appears as though the 20-year old is set to be offered an extension.

The Daily Record has claimed that Maxwell has done enough in his two loan spells at Queen of the South and Ayr United to get a crack at a higher level.

Obviously we are well catered for at left-back with Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic but we can’t let academy players leave for nothing if they have the potential to one day contribute in the first-team.

Extending the Scotland youth cap’s contract by another couple of seasons will give the management and recruitment staff a chance to properly assess Maxwell at a higher level – there is no point sending players to the Championship, watching them do well, then just letting them leave. It doesn’t make any sense.

From which country does Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist come from?

When a player does what is asked of them they should be rewarded, player development is never linear and it should serve as motivation for the players to work hard – the first XI can seem an awful long way away for some players at times,  Maxwell’s interview gave a fascinating insight into what he is thinking, almost as if, with Bassey and Barisic in front of him, that there is no way he can fight his way through.

A new contract would prove that the club believes in him and that he does have a future at the club, his time will come, he just needs to be patient.
