Rangers have been linked with more than a few wingers since Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived back in Glasgow and the most recent rumour concerning Albert Gudmundsson throws up an interesting connection.

Available to discuss a pre-contract agreement on January 1, the 24-year old Icelandic international has also been attracting the attention of Old Firm rivals Celtic, however, should he follow in his great-grandfather’s footsteps, there is only one place he should be heading – Ibrox.

Albert Gudmundsson Snr was also an international footballer in his own right and when he moved to Scotland in the 1940s to study at university, he was signed by Rangers before heading south to join Arsenal, he enjoyed a successful career on the pitch before dipping his toes into politics, going as far as to become Iceland’s Minister of Finance.

If being champions, top of the league with a good squad and still in the Europa League wasn’t enough to tempt young Gudmundsson, then maybe the family connection will be enough to persuade him where his future should lie – Van Bronckhorst will be fully aware of his ability having spent the last eight years playing in the Netherlands with Heerenveen, PSV and now AZ Alkmaar.

As a winger, another selling point is how Rangers system is designed to get the best out of wide players and the amount of possession he will get – with pace to burn, he would be a welcome addition to the squad, let’s just hope that he has inherited his great-grandfather’s sense of judgement.
