Steven Gerrard very rarely gets it wrong in his post match press conferences when it comes to his analysis of his side’s performances and on Sunday he was right once again.

The second half was a lot better but by that stage we had given Motherwell the goal they needed to sit in and protect their lead, it’s an awful lot harder to implement your game plan with almost a whole team blocking your way to goal.

The gaffer has a few options ahead of the visit of Ross County next weekend and the games on the horizon; rotate his squad, make subtle alterations to the shape or bring in additions to freshen the team up.

Personally, I’d go for a mixture of the three, and although Scott Wright is said to be close to agreeing a pre-contract move, the player I’d most like to see through the door is Daniel Johnson of Preston North End.

We’ve been heavily linked with him since the summer and he would provide the sort of direct attacking play that can be lacking at times from our midfield, he would also allow us to rest Ryan Kent despite being a totally different type of player.

At our best this season we have played with one sitting midfielder and had two attacking and the recent injuries in midfield have restricted our ability to play with this style and shape, if we can get a pre-contract agreement sorted for the 28-year old, negotiating his early release could help to provide the extra spark we’ve been lacking recently.
