Rangers have been given a boost in their hopes of signing Preston North End’s playmaker Daniel Johnson – branded the “perfect ten” – with the news that the 28-year old has rejected the offer of a new contract with the Championship side.

Football Insider has reported on Johnson being given the chance to be the club’s highest earner alongside another Gers target, Ben Davies, but has decided that his future lies elsewhere.

This now opens the door for the Light Blues to negotiate either a pre-contract deal or a cut-price move to secure him in this window, they had a £2million bid rejected in the summer but it would be highly unlikely if they were to offer anything in this region again.

Johnson was reportedly offered £17,000 a week to stay at Preston, which is well within our wage structure, and it would now be a surprise if Ross Wilson didn’t go back in for the forward who has four goals and three assists this season.

Do we need another "number 10"?

No

As a natural “leftie” he is perfect to play as one of the two number tens that Rangers play with coming in to add competition to Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent in support of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe.

The squad that has been assembled needs very little attention now other than fine tuning and minor upgrades, plus the odd signing for the future, being able to get someone like Johnson in on a pre-contract would be a great bit of business and add to the attacking depth that has put us in a commanding position at the top of the table.
