Another appearance against Motherwell, another goal for Cedric Itten.

The Swiss international striker came off the bench yesterday at Fir Park to score the all important equaliser for Rangers and came close to getting a winner.

The man signed from St. Gallen is hitting expectations in his initial season at Ibrox, here is why.

It goes without saying that Itten is not considered a first-choice pick for Rangers at this present time. This is reflected in the appearances the Swiss has made so far this season but could that be about to change?

Basel-born Itten has scored five goals across all competitions for Rangers so far this season. Yesterday’s strike means that all four of his Premiership goals have come against Motherwell. He also netted in his start against Lech Poznan away from home in the Europa League.

Altogether he has made 23 appearances to date in this campaign. Aside from six starts, he has returned four vital goals coming off the bench, all of which have had a significant impact on those games.

Gerrard has gone on record in regard to patience and development with his frontman. After a clever, industrious performance on the right side of the attack in the 0-1 away victory over Kilmarnock last November, the manager said of his performance,

“He was superb – man of the match. This is one of the hardest places to come as a team and for an individual, especially in the forward areas.”

“The Killie defenders are physical and can make it uncomfortable for you. Cedric’s hold-up play today – that was a top performance from someone who is big, strong and a threat.”

“He has been patient. He’s one we’ve had to treat slightly differently.”

“He’s a young lad coming away from home on his own. He hasn’t had an off season, he hasn’t had a rest yet.”

“So I need to find the right time to try and look after him. But he is hungry and a great professional. He’s only going to get better and better.”

This was followed up by another very good showing yesterday in Motherwell so it is clear that Itten carries a threat in Rangers attack.

Threat posed

On the second half equaliser and performance by Rangers number 11 yesterday, the Ibrox gaffer stated,

“I’m sure Cedric in his quieter times has probably been a bit frustrated with me in terms of opportunities and game time and if he keeps providing like that I can’t ignore him for too long.”

“We have four quality centre-forwards, so it’s impossible to keep them all happy. But I’m really pleased with his cameo performance today. He looked strong, lively and he was a threat. He’s really honest and he’s never passive.”

It is very important that Rangers have striking options who can make a significant contribution. There are prevalent signs evidenced by Cedric Itten that he is getting better, developing and staking his claim as a player who can be relied upon.
