Sometimes when you consider other players in Scotland as potential transfer targets for Rangers, quite often you will hear “I’ve not really seen much of him to be honest”, after all, why would you expose yourself to Hamilton against St Mirren when there are infinitely more enjoyable things you could be doing?

So, after suggesting that Steven Gerrard should be targeting Allan Campbell on a free transfer at the end of the season judging him purely on his games against us is probably not the fairest way to reflect on his full potential.

Step forward Stats Smart Brad, a scout/recruitment analyst who has provided Twitter with the most in depth look at the 22-year old Motherwell midfielder to date and there is a lot to like, especially on the attacking front:

The report covers everything, and I mean everything. Positionally where he plays, how he contributes to attacks and what role he plays in defence. It also compares his output to others in the league and, for an in-demand player who would only cost a development fee, he comes out looking pretty good. What was most interesting is that he occupies similar areas on the pitch to Ryan Jack and frequently covers the right-back, a role he would be expected to do for us.

For a player of his age there are always going to be things to be worked on and with a Rangers coaching staff that has already seen improvements in several players, developing Campbell’s ability to “receive the ball in tight spaces and be able to keep and progress the ball” shouldn’t be problem – he would also be working with international players of a vastly superior quality to Stephen O’Donnell.

It’s a fantastic piece of work and one that, if it makes it’s way on to Ross Wilsons desk, could prove to be the difference in determining where the Scotland Under-21 international’s next destination is.
