Rangers made an approach to sign Liverpool youngster Adam Lewis on loan during the summer transfer window, according to Goal.

The 18-year-old has yet to make his senior debut at the Reds, but Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was so impressed with his talents when coach at Anfield that he made an enquiry to bring him to Ibrox, says the report.

He’s been a big part of their U18s and U23s sides over the last couple of seasons and has recently been seen training with Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad ahead of a potential debut later this season.

Primarily a left-back, he can also slot in on the left of midfield, with his attacking prowess said to be the main thrust of his overall game.

Clearly the move to Ibrox didn’t work out, with Gerrard eventually opting to bring Borna Barisic and Jon Flanagan into the club.

Has Jamie Murphy’s injury opened the possibility of bringing Lewis’ name back up to the recruitment team in January? The left midfield area could do with another player or two to bolster options, especially in anticipation of a long season going deep into multiple competitions.

Perhaps Gerrard will return to his old club and manage to convince them that this time his short-term future is best served in Glasgow.
