It’s a signing that has gone unnoticed in most parts of European football but there will have been pockets of the East End of Glasgow that may have been aware of one Dutch youngster taking a step up in league.

Vital Rangers covered how Sydney van Hooijdonk’s NAC Breda contract expired this summer and that at 21-years old, he would represent an exciting player to bring in to our forward line if Jermain Defoe decided to hang up his playing boots.

As it is, the Dutch youth cap has opted for a move to Serve A with Bologna fending off interest from Udinese to secure his signature, joining one-time Gers target Aaron Hickey in the process, as reported by Football Oranje:

“The 21-year-old was available on a free transfer after leaving NAC Breda at the end of last season and has decided on an adventure in Italy.

“Bologna have confirmed that the son of Pierre van Hooijdonk has signed a four-year contract on Saturday morning. He now becomes a teammate of Jerdy Schouten and Mitchell Dijks.

“Van Hooijdonk made 70 appearances for NAC Breda, scoring 23 times.”

Sydney shares a lot of traits similar to his dad and his physicality would have served him well in Scottish football, I just hope it’s not another example of a player who goes on to bigger and better things, making Bologna a fortune in the process when he was so readily available and affordable.

Which new signing are you most excited to see next season?
