Rangers have tapped into Steven Gerrard’s contact book a few times to enhance his playing squad with varying degrees of success gained from recruiting players from the Liverpool academy, but with the gaffer looking to improve his midfield, perhaps he should be looking to the blue half of Merseyside – and a team that has provided many Gers legends in the past.

Carlo Ancelotti is in the midst of a significant re-build at Everton and several members of his first-team squad have been deemed surplus to requirements, specifically, players that are in positions where Rangers are looking to improve.

One player in particular who could offer an additional creative body in the engine room is Gylfi Sigurdsson, the Iceland captain hasn’t hit the heights expected of him following a £45million move to Goodison in 2017 and, just days away from his 31st birthday, he is fighting a losing battle against James Rodriguez to get regular game time if he stays at the club.

He has two years left to run on his deal and, according to toffeeweb.com, he is lined up for a move to MLS in America when it runs out, however, he would be a perfect fit in Gerrard’s formation, capable of playing as either the more advanced member of midfield or as one of the number tens that support a central striker.

Who would you most like Rangers to sign from Everton's list of unwanted players?

Sigurdsson is known for his long range shooting – off either foot – and his ability to pick a pass in and around the box, having the likes of Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Kemar Roofe to play with could make for some very entertaining football.

He’s unlikely to get an offer from a bigger club than Everton, so maybe the chance of European football and the “Gerrard factor” could be enough to tempt him up the M6, if he’s willing to take a pay-cut of course.
