Steven Gerrard has hinted at new faces possibly arriving over the coming days having freed up wages following the respective departures of Ross McCrorie, Jamie Murphy and Greg Docherty and speculation has been strangely quiet.

The defence has been as close to perfect as it could have been with Jon McLaughlin and Allan McGregor barely having a save to make since the domestic campaign kicked off and as a result, there is unlikely to be any additions to the rearguard.

In the forward department there is, however, a couple of issues. Jordan Jones has been told he is free to find a new club and Brandon Barker – despite showing glimpses – can’t be relied upon to produce the numbers that Gerrard wants from his attackers.

A lot will also depend on the future of Alfredo Morelos, with it looking more a case of “when” rather than “if” the Colombian international will head for pastures new, Porto are said to have joined the chase for the striker which should help push the price up or at least guarantee the £20million that is said to have been agreed to secure his services.

What is the priority?

The midfield has looked better with a slight tactical tweak and the return of Steven Davis, but there is an obvious gap for a player that can make an impact from a deeper position without the need to pull Joe Aribo closer to the defence – trying to find one that has the passing of Davis, the energy of Jack and the dribbling and finishing ability of Aribo might be a big ask but it is one that would go a long way in solving some of the problems that Rangers have had issues with before.

Expect the unexpected from the recruitment team with the press so far unable to predict who the targets are, with the gaffer looking for players who can improve the starting XI, we could yet see the signing of the summer arrive before the Premiership resumes.
