Steven Gerrard has admitted the club are still looking for a central defender in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

As reported by The Daily Record, the Ibrox boss has revealed he doesn’t know whether any incoming centre-back will be signed on a loan basis or permanently, but that he is hopeful of signing one before the summer deadline expires on Friday.

Although Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have started the season superbly, there’s clearly still room for another to come in and provide not just depth but also competition for first-team places in the defensive line.

It would also give Steven Gerrard more options should he choose to utilise a back-three formation regularly going forward.

An injury or suspension to either Goldson or Katic at this stage would severely hamper the team and leave fans uncertain of the side’s ability to defend well, so it’s important quality is added to the squad this week.

Bruno Alves, David Bates and Fabio Cardoso all left the club this summer, with Ross McCrorie also moving forward into midfield.

Thankfully the manager has recognised we clearly need another body in the position and hopefully the club can get a deal over the line over the next few days.
