Steven Gerrard has all but confirmed that George Edmundson has played his last game for the club after he was asked about the future of the centre-halves.

With the gaffer preferring to have four senior central defenders, Jack Simpson through the door and Leon Balogun likely to have his stay extended, there won’t be room as six simply doesn’t go into four.

Niko Katic, as confirmed by Gerrard, isn’t being counted in the numbers given that he has been ruled out for the rest of the season and will likely have to go out on loan next year, he simply won’t get the game time he needs to continue his rehabilitation if he stays at Ibrox in the short-term.

Edmundson now needs to impress at Derby County, either to make his stay permanent or to attract other potential suitors, he will be rusty, but will be given the opportunity by Wayne Rooney to make his mark.

A centre-half with his pace and ability on the ball will always be an asset, and he still has the potential to be a decent defender, it just looks as though it won’t be in Light Blue.
