Sky Sports pundit Kris Commons singled out Allan McGregor for special praise on Saturday after a string of saves that kept Rangers in the match away to St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard’s side had to work hard for their win and in the first half were particularly put under pressure by the Paisley strugglers, with McGregor having to be called into action to keep the scores locked at 0-0.

The Gers eventually found a way to victory thanks to Daniel Candeias and Alfredo Morelos.

McGregor was singled out for praise by Sky Sports pundit Kris Commons at half-time.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event, the former Celtic man said: “If they had an average goalkeeper in goal they [St Mirren] could have quite easily been one or two up. But the fact that Allan McGregor is such a good goalkeeper, he’s kept them in the game.”

It’s not the first time McGregor has shown his worth since returning to the club on a free transfer, to become Steven Gerrard’s second signing.

He has arguably been the signing of the entire summer, during which there were many arrivals.

If not for him we would be nowhere near our current position in the UEFA Europa League and he’s been crucial domestically too.

It’s never ideal to have to rely on your goalkeeper, but at least we’re in capable hands during tricky spells in matches and as shown on Saturday, that can be the basis for a win later in the game.
