Since Ross Wilson arrived at Ibrox, our scouting network and recruitment departments have gradually been improved to match that of a club with our ambitions, we a finally shopping in markets outwith these shores.

Only this week we have seen reports of us having scouts in Belgium to watch Anderlecht and Charleroi, speculation as to who we were keeping tabs on not 100% clear.

Some have suggested that former target Francis Amuzu is the man being pursued, whereas The Scotsman claims that it could have been another name previously linked to Rangers:

“According to respected news outlet Le Soir, new Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst sent members of his backroom team to take in Anderlecht’s 3-1 victory away at Charleroi on Sunday night.

“They would have watched midfielder Sergio Gomez – a player who has been loosely linked with Rangers in the past – score twice for Anderlecht.”

Gomez can play anywhere down the left-hand side and has five goals and eight assists mainly from left-back, the sort of numbers that he would be expected to produce for Rangers given how highly James Tavernier and Borna Barisic have set the bar.

Who did GvB make his competitive Rangers debut against as a player?

Valued at £2.7million, the 21-year old Spanish youth cap has experience of both La Liga and the Bundesliga making it easy to see why he would be on our radar, however, with a long term contract at Anderlecht, he wouldn’t come cheap, he would also only be needed if Barisic or Calvin Bassey were sold, we are well stocked in that position just now.

As always, nothing will come out of the club as to who it was we were monitoring, but it, at least, provides another indicator that we are on the right tracks, casting our net further and wider will only discover more hidden gems in the future.
