Scotland international midfielder Kenny McLean has reiterated his desire to one day, be a senior Rangers player.

The former St. Mirren and Aberdeen man, now at Norwich City is in recovery from a cruciate ligament injury which ruled him out of Euro 2020, having made a significant contribution to Scotland’s qualification for the tournament.

McLean is currently on track for a return to full fitness for the early part of the new season, with hopes that he can take full part in the Canaries pre-season programme, having thankfully avoided the need for surgery on his knee.

In a wide ranging extended interview with The Athletic, the 29-year old shared thoughts on his Premier League return, Euro2020, fatherhood and his passion for the ‘better side’ of Glasgow:

“I mean, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do – as a kid that’s what you want to do, play for your boyhood team.”

“Right now I’m about to play in the Premier League again, so I’m not thinking about it! But for me and my family, it would be pretty special. I grew up a Rangers fan, used to go to the games with my dad and as a kid in Glasgow, you support Rangers or Celtic and you want to play for one of them. So I was on the better side.”

“McLean smiles at that line, as he does about one of the profound changes in his life since becoming a Norwich player in January 2018 – becoming a father.”

Chance

Approaching his prime years, McLean will be striving for a full recovery and to show his worth in the Premier League.

Under the tough demands of Danie Farke, Norwich will not be wanting just to make up the numbers this time, but instead to make a mark on England’s top flight, to prolong their stay in the top tier.

In the dressing room at Carrow Road, there will also be a familiar face in the form of another Rangers youth and current Scotland cap in the form of Billy Gilmour.

The pair will draw comfort and counsel from each other in the months ahead as Norwich City return to take on the big boys.

With two years of his current contract remaining in Norfolk, it remains to be seen if the chance for Kenny McLean to walk up the marble staircase as a Ranger will transpire.
