Rangers Women’s long serving captain Clare Gemmell bowed out in style today, in her last home game for the club ahead of her upcoming retirement from the game.

In a comfortable 6-0 victory over Motherwell at the Rangers Training Centre on Sunday afternoon, the skipper rounded off the scoring for her team.

That came after the opener by Nicola Docherty as well as a Kirsten Reilly strike and a third from Rachel McLauchlan in the first half.

After the interval, Zoe Ness netted a fourth and and own goal followed – leaving the last goal of the day to Gemmell.

In her heartfelt message, she stated:

“I cannot explain the emotion of playing my last home game for this amazing club, I am so honoured to say that I have pulled on that badge.”

Tributes to the club staff and teammates followed before Gemmell signed off with:

“I will miss you all. I will forever be a Ger.”

Response

Following a seven year stint, Clare Gemmell will leave a very significant hole in the side and the dressing room, which will need to be filled adequately.

It is another key response that is required for next season, coming as the team have disappointed in the end of season climax.

With only one game left, Malky Thomson’s side have only an outside chance of securing Champions League football and a top-two finish.

They need to defeat league leaders Glasgow City and hope that Celtic slip up, away to Motherwell.
