Rangers winger Jordan Jones registered his first senior international goal for Northern Ireland as they overcame Malta 3-0 in a practice match played on Sunday in Klagenfurt, Austria.

The other goals came courtesy of Gavin Whyte and Ali McCann – the St Johnstone midfielder also bagging his first goal for the side.

It was the first win in 90 minutes for Ian Baraclough, almost 12 months into his reign, ahead of another friendly game against Ukraine in Dnipro on Thursday.

Jones will be very happy with his strike, given his disappointing end to the season at club level.

He was an unused sub as Sunderland failed to beat Lincoln in the League One Playoff semi-final, second leg – ending his stay on Wearside in the process.

Jones now returns to Rangers for pre-season with major questions on his future at the club.

On his early strike against Malta, the Redcar born player stated:

“An honour to be back involved with Northern Ireland, great win and delighted to get my first goal.”
