Man City wonderkid would fit Rangers “perfectly”

Rangers do need more Scottish players in and around the squad, not to benefit the national team or anything to do with identity but because there is a benefit when compiling squad lists for UEFA competition.

Next season we could see the likes of Stephen Kelly and Kai Kennedy play a more prominent role in the first-team but there is little chance of Steven Gerrard going out and buying local to supplement his squad – as discussed already by Vital Rangers, the value just simply isn’t there.

Lewis Ferguson is the prime example, £4million? We paid less than that for Ianis Hagi and his value has already trebled, a Scottish player just doesn’t have that attraction, until they prove they can do it in a “better” league like John McGinn or Scott McTominay, for example.

We already have a strong contingent in the Scotland youth squads but it is a big step up to the first-team at Ibrox, there might not be any senior players kicking about but what about further afield and those with potential?

Speaking to the Scots Abroad Podcast, they feel that current Under-21 stars Lewis Fiorini of Manchester City and Ewan Urain of Bilbao Athletic could be attractive options, if Gerrard and Ross Wilson do decide to up the quota:

“Urain could slot in and be a signing we hoped Itten was going to end up being. Fiorini would fit perfectly. Fiorini in one of the side central midfielders of the three.”

Urain, at 21-years old will very much be an unknown quantity to most Scottish football observers, but with four goals and five assists in a little over 800 minutes he has enjoyed a hugely successful season in Spain’s second tier, at 1.93m tall, he combines his natural physicality with an ability to bring others in to play that is well suited to having other forwards close by.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

Fiorini has had an exceptional debut season in senior football with NAC Breda with six goals and five assists – from midfield – in the Dutch second division, the 19-year old showing maturity way beyond his years as he narrowly missed out on leading his side to the Eredivisie.

Out of the two, Fiorini is one that Steve Clarke would do well to get capped as soon as possible, given that he also qualifies to play for England, he has that level of potential.

If we are looking for any loan players to supplement our midfield Fiorini should be near the top of the list, it would allow us to send one of our youngsters out on loan whilst also adding quality to the squad, he’d give perfect cover for Ryan Jack as he continues his return to fitness – it would also give him a taste of life at Rangers, should his Man City career not work out.

Two to watch this summer and keep an eye on, if they aren’t already on one of our director of football’s lists I’d be very surprised.
