With transfer silly season almost upon us there has been an increase in speculation over the last week or so with regards to players that Giovanni van Bronckhorst might be looking at to strengthen his Rangers squad.

When reports claimed that there were scouts from Auchenhowie at the Anderlecht v Charleroi game last weekend, it only further fuelled the flames of speculation as to who we could possibly have been looking at.

Two names that immediately sprung to mind were Sergio Gomez and Francis Amuzu due to previous connections with the players, however, there has been another that a few outlets have mentioned now – Wesley Hoedt.

The former Southampton defender was signed by the Premier League side when Ross Wilson was director of football at St Mary’s but there is one massive reason why he won’t be heading to Ibrox any time soon.

The 27-year old once cost £15million and only signed for Anderlecht in the summer, if we were interested in him, that would have been the time to make a move for him.

Who did GvB make his competitive Rangers debut against as a player?

Capped six times by the Netherlands and with experience in Serie A, La Liga, the Premier League and the Eredivisie, there is no doubt that Hoedt has the quality that we would be looking for but that would come at a cost, with other options like Riechedly Bazoer and Danilho Doekhi available on pre-contract agreements in January, it wouldn’t make sense to sign a left-sided centre-half when we already have four that can play in that position.

Ross Wilson has sprung a few surprises before, but even this one would be out of his reach.
